Harvesting: Precision and Optimal Maturity

Harvesting: Precision and Optimal Maturity

The harvesting phase is critical as it directly influences the fruit's post-harvest life and quality.
Maturity Indexing for Non-Climacteric Fruit:

  • Dragon fruit is harvested 30–32 days post-flowering at peak ripeness. Each fruit is inspected for color, firmness, and bracts; overripe ones are rejected.

Gentle Harvesting Technique:

  • Fruits are cut with sterilized tools, leaving a 1–2?cm stem. Harvesting occurs during cool hours, with fruits placed in clean, padded crates for protection.

Post-Harvest Handling & Packing

Post-Harvest Handling & Packing

Hygiene and Preservation Excellence Upon arrival at the packhouse, dragon fruits undergo a series of controlled processes designed to preserve their quality for international transit.
Rapid Transport to Packhouse:

  • Fruits are swiftly transported in covered, ventilated vehicles to protect from sun and dust. Minimizing transit time preserves freshness by reducing moisture loss and respiration.

Receiving and Initial Quality Check:

  • On arrival, fruits are pre-sorted to remove damaged or immature ones. Each batch is logged with farm origin, harvest date, and quantity for full traceability.

Washing and Cleaning:

  • Fruits are washed with sanitized potable water to remove dirt and microbes, then thoroughly air- or blower-dried to eliminate moisture and prevent fungal growth.

Sorting and Grading:

  • Fruits are sorted manually and automatically to remove defects, then uniformly graded by size, weight, and color to meet export and domestic carton standards.

Pre-cooling The Crucial Step:

  •  Dragon fruits are rapidly pre-cooled to 3–5°C using forced-air systems, slowing ripening and extending shelf life.

Post-Harvest Treatment (if applicable and compliant):

  • If needed, fruits undergo a documented, approved fungicide dip to prevent decay, following all safety and regulatory standards.

Packaging:

  • Each dragon fruit is individually wrapped in soft, food-safe material, then packed in ventilated 9–10?kg cartons with cushioning to ensure airflow, protection, and freshness.

Each carton is clearly labeled with the "Saigon Greens" logo, product type (e.g., "Dragon Fruit - White Flesh"), origin (Vietnam), net weight/count, harvest and packing dates, lot number for traceability, handling instructions ("Keep Refrigerated," "Fragile"), and any applicable certifications like GlobalGAP, HACCP, or ISO.

Loading and Exporting

Loading and Exporting

Maintaining Cold Chain Integrity and Compliance Maintaining an unbroken cold chain and thorough documentation are absolutely critical for successful international delivery.

Dedicated Cold Storage:

  • Optimal Holding Conditions: Packed cartons are stored at 3–5°C with 90–95% humidity, monitored continuously for stability.

Reefer Container Preparation:

  • Pre-cooling and Sanitation: Reefer containers are cleaned, sanitized, and pre-cooled to 3–5°C with full pre-trip checks.
  • Integrated Temperature Monitoring: Digital data loggers are placed inside containers to track temperature throughout transit.

Precision Loading:

  • Efficient and Controlled Process: Cartons are rapidly and carefully loaded in optimal patterns to maintain airflow and prevent shifting.
  • Trained Supervision: A quality control supervisor oversees loading, verifying stacking, carton count, and package condition.
  • Secure Sealing: Container doors are sealed with tamper-evident seals to ensure transit security.
